You hear scratching overhead.
Maybe it’s scurrying inside a wall. Movement in the attic. A sound that keeps showing up at the same time each day or night.
Sometimes there’s no sound at all. You notice damage along a roofline, an opening near a soffit, disturbed material around the exterior of your home or another area that simply doesn’t look right.
Those can be signs worth investigating.
Squirrels, mice, rats, raccoons, skunks, opossums and other small animals can create problems in and around North Texas homes. Sometimes homeowners know exactly what they’re dealing with. Other times, the first question is simply:
What is getting into my house?
Finding the animal is important.
Finding how it is getting in can be equally important.
That is where nuisance animal trapping, exclusion and home repair begin to work together.
Signs You May Have Animal Activity Around Your Home
You don't necessarily have to see an animal to know something may be there.
Homeowners may first notice:
Scratching, scurrying or movement in the attic or walls
Recurring noises overhead
Droppings or nesting material
Unusual odors
Damage around soffits, fascia or rooflines
Openings around exterior materials
Disturbed insulation or other materials
Tracks or recurring activity around the property
Damage or openings near the lower portions of a structure
One sign alone doesn't necessarily identify the animal or confirm where it is entering.
That's why we don't recommend starting with assumptions.
What's Making That Noise in the Attic?
This is one of the most common questions a homeowner has when unexplained activity starts overhead.
Is it a squirrel? A mouse? A rat? Something larger?
The location, time of activity, sounds, visible evidence and condition of the structure can all provide information, but a sound by itself doesn't necessarily identify the animal.
The better approach is to evaluate the activity and the property together.
That means looking beyond what you're hearing and asking another question:
"Where could it be getting in?"
Animal Entry Points Aren't Always Obvious
Some entry areas practically announce themselves.
Damaged material may be pulled away from the house. A gap may be visible around the roofline. An opening may be large enough that you immediately recognize there is a problem.
Others are considerably easier to miss.
Roof intersections, soffits, fascia, vents and transitions between different exterior materials are examples of areas that may warrant closer inspection when animal activity is suspected.
And don't forget to look down.
Potential access isn't limited to the roof. Lower portions of a structure, garages, sheds, decks and other sheltered areas may also provide opportunities for unwanted animals.
An opening that looks insignificant from the ground deserves a closer look when there are other signs of activity.
Getting the Animal Out Is Only Part of the Issue
This is where our home-improvement background becomes particularly important. Trapping or removing an animal can address the immediate activity. It doesn't automatically address the condition that allowed access to the home.
If an entry area remains accessible after the animal is gone, you've potentially solved only one part of the problem.

What Is Wildlife Exclusion?
Wildlife exclusion focuses on addressing areas that animals may be using to access a structure.
The appropriate exclusion method depends on the animal, location, construction of the home and conditions we find during the assessment.
This is also why we don't recommend blindly closing every opening you find.
Before an access point is closed, it's important to understand the activity taking place around it. An animal may still be inside, there may be more than one access area, or what looks like the obvious opening may not tell the whole story.
Assessment comes first.
When exclusion or repair is needed, our home-improvement experience allows us to look beyond the animal and evaluate the structure involved.
Trapping, Removal and Relocation Are Different
Not every nuisance animal situation is handled the same way.
Species matters.
Property conditions matter.
Texas regulations matter.
Texas Parks & Wildlife Department regulates nuisance fur-bearing animal trapping and relocation. Relocation of eligible nuisance fur-bearing animals requires authorization from TPWD as well as permission from the owner of the property where the animal will be released.
Certain species are subject to additional restrictions. Texas prohibits transporting live raccoons, foxes and coyotes under statewide rabies quarantine regulations.
In other words, “catch it and release it somewhere else” isn't a universal wildlife-removal plan.

Our trapping methods and animal handling are determined by species, property conditions and applicable Texas regulations.
What About Mice and Rats?
Rodent activity can be particularly frustrating because homeowners may hear the problem long before they see it.
Small animals can take advantage of openings that may not appear significant when you're standing outside looking at the house.
Depending on the circumstances, one-way devices and exclusion methods may be appropriate for certain types of activity.
Again, the structure matters.
Finding an opening doesn't automatically prove that's where the animal entered, and hearing something in a wall doesn't tell us everything we need to know about the situation.
